I decided last week to quit my corporate marketing job after 15 years and start my own marketing consulting company. It’s a little unnerving because I don’t have much in savings to fall back on, but here I am Week 1 hustling to get my new business set up. I thought I’d chronicle this journey here for you and for me. I suspect it’s going to be a slightly different Working Mom journey than when I was working in my corporate job.
I worked for three different firms during my corporate career, and each one was a little bit different in their attitude towards work/life balance. The first and second company that I worked for were both good about respecting their employee’s life outside of work. The second company was much more progressive and supportive, and after COVID, they fully embraced a remote work situation simply because that was what an employee wanted.
The third company, and the one I just left, had a bit of an “old school thinking” undertone to them. There was still a bit of an attitude about work being first. Decisions were sometimes last-minute, travel was sometimes requested last-minute, and deadlines weren’t always respected. They also mandated a 3-day in the office policy.
Now I have a lot of mixed feelings about these mindsets and I fully recognize that everyone’s situation and needs are different. But for me, this old school thinking was a significant factor in my decision to go off and start my own business and hustle for myself.
So here I am, embracing the challenges and opportunities of entrepreneurship with an open mind. It's a leap of faith, but one I'm ready to take for the sake of reclaiming control over my time and priorities. As I navigate this new chapter, I invite you to follow along with me as I try, fail and succeed. I want to redefine what it means to be a working mom in today's ever-evolving landscape and it starts here with my own hustle.
As I win my own clients and projects, I believe it’s extremely important to embody this value in the way I conduct my business and interact with my clients. So I intend to blaze my trail with the acceptance that I am a working mom, I am my own person, and I want to enjoy my life. To keep me focused, I curated a collection of podcasts that are keeping me motivated and centered. Check out the link below for The Mashup's Spotify Playlists.
