Mom Works Out

Short days and long work hours makes it even more difficult the find the time to take care of ourselves. I find that I feel better both mentally and physically when I move my body. It's hard with kids and a career though. I set realistic goals, do things I enjoy, and remember to...
Start small but now...
Take a walk every day. 10 minutes. 20 minutes. 30 minutes. It doesn't matter how long it is, as long as its everyday. I find my body is much happier even if all I do is take a short walk.
Game up and aim for 10,000 steps a day - track it with a sleek and stylish Fitbit.
I'm also using a walking pad to get steps when the weather is bad. It basically has eliminated any excuse I have to not move. (Truthfully, I don't hit 10,000 everyday, but I do aim for it.)
Involve the kids and help them set a foundation for healthy habits. When they see you take time for yourself and be healthy, they see you setting an example of a healthy lifestyle and self-care. My 7-year-old loves doing yoga me and we get extra time together.
Find what moves you...
Whether it's dancing, yoga, or a power walk, choose workouts that resonate with you. Blend in activities that involve the kids, turning playtime into a calorie-burning session. I use the FitOn app for classes and routines when I need inspiration. Similarly the Downward Dog Yoga app is great.
I have an at home gym that helps eliminate the additional step of getting in the car and driving to the gym. Literally any free 10 minutes can be turned in to a workout route. My home gym is stocked with light weight dumbbells, a yoga mat and NordiTrack Bike. That's it!
(HINT: The FitOn app has body weight cardio, so you don't even need the bike!!)
Find clothes you love...
Wearing clothes that stay put and that make you feel good are a much overlooked step to getting moving. Old Navy's Activewear has been my go to for years and I have basically loved every piece I own. One word when it comes to leggings - Compression!
These pants and tops by Amazon also have good reviews:
Leggings: The Gym People | CompressionZ
Shirts: Sleeveless | Short sleeve
Don't forget the shoes. Everyone has their own preference, but I love my Adidas.
Everything counts...
Finding the time is my biggest hurdle. Sound familiar? Not every fitness goal has to be met in the gym.
A walking meeting or break during work definitely count. A 10-minute yoga stretch. A 20-minute walk around the the block with the kids before dark is fantastic. On the weekends, I love to go for a walk or a hike. The kids love playing tag at the park. My point is that everything counts!
Remember, it's not just about the physical changes but also the mental rejuvenation that comes with staying active. This is about taking care of yourself so you can take care of your loved ones. You've got this, mom!
